The Mail Suite is now version 1.0. The Mail suite defines an AppleEvent object hierarchy and some AppleEvents for offering script access to electronic mail systems on the MacOS platform. Although it covers only a portion of what we envision as a complete mail suite, it is based on careful design and extensive developer feedback. The goal is to take a significant step in the right direction but avoid trying to design the complete suite in one iteration. On the second page of the document, there is a listing of changes. You will find that these changes are a direct result of developer feedback.
We have included a dictionary (‘aete’ resource) with the Mail Suite so that you can begin to develop a feel for what scripts in the Mail Suite might look like. A demonstration script is included along with an application shell, MailFoo (all it does is ExitToShell() if launched - it will probably crash your machine), which incorporates the ‘aete’ resource. This way, you can check the syntax of scripts against the phantom application to get a feel for the dictionary. The MailSuite.h file provides the necessary programming constant definitions for all of the Apple Events defined in the Mail Suite 1.0 document. You can use these definitions in your programs when developing scripts.
We remind you that this information and software is provided as is and has not been thoroughly tested. Consider it as sample code. Your comments on both the Suite and the contents of the dictionary would be appreciated. Also let us know if you have specific ideas about how to further develop or extend the Mail Suite.
